Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an umbrella term that describes a range of therapies. CBT is evidence based for most common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. More recent forms of cognitive and behavioural therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) has been shown to be helpful for people struggling with big life adjustments such as long-term health conditions. Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), another newer cognitive and behavioural therapy, and can be particularly helpful for those experiencing self-criticism or low self-esteem. All forms of cognitive and behavioural therapies are based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviour are interconnected, therefore the way that you think and behave can positively or negatively impact your emotions. For many people struggling with difficult emotions, they become stuck in a vicious cycle which increases their distress. All forms of cognitive and behavioural therapies therefore start with understanding what that vicious cycle looks like for you, what might have contributed to its development and how we can make changes to the cycle to improve your mood.

Behavioural Couples Therapy
Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT) is an evidence-based talking therapy treatment for depression. It is suitable for couples where low mood or depression is affecting one or both partners leading to distress within the relationship. During sessions we work together to understand and make sense of what is causing the current distress or tension in your relationship and what is keeping it going, through exploring recurring patterns and vicious cycles. We will also explore relationship strengths. BCT can be particularly useful for ongoing tensions/arguments that have been difficult to resolve independently as a couple such as infidelity, reproductive difficulties, intimacy and sexual intimacy and adjustments such as new children. BCT can prevent depression relapse as it also addresses any relationship issues that may be contributing to or maintaining depression.
